------- Additional Comments From lionel.ulmer(a)free.fr 2004-16-04 12:16 -------
The bug you describe is actually a well known 'feature' of Wine.
Basically, Wine has two mutually exclusive ways to render fonts on screen :
either using the core X11 protocol or to load .TTF files that are stored in your
(fake) Windows fonts directory.
In your case, you were using core X11 rendering ... up until the point in time
some .TTF file appeared in the fonts directory => Wine switched to using the TTF
way of rendering fonts. And as the only available font was the funky one, all
your characters appeared corrupted.
So the fix is as Henk suggested : install some TTF fonts alongside the
astrological font in the fonts directory (for example the Bitstream ones).

more details this bug
Trying to run application "AZZ Cardfile"
This application should display both an idex window and an open window
displaying the contents of the index card that is selected.
The index window is working
The display of the contents is not which must be in from the erros being
reported using "richtext formating"
I see this bug has been kicking around since 2002.
This is my 1st test of installing wine and seeing what it can do. This is not
encouraging and now seeing that it's doesn't seem to be on anyones agenda to fix
the problem is disappointing. Should I think other wise?

Just my 2 cents.
Although the behaviour is odd, and maybe even wrong in the Wine context:
Windows does behave the same way. Try deleting all your fonts (and have fun
getting them back) and then installing only these fonts. Windows will use them
(AFAIK I've seen similar behaviour on Win98).
Wine behaviour should probably only try to use fonts for certain purposes when
they match to default names, or are defined in some registry entry to be used
as such.
You could download Franks WineTools and install all MS corefonts with it.

Summary: wine displays installed fonts instead of default
Product: Wine
Version: 20040309
Platform: Other
URL: http://www.astrocontact.at/downloadcenter.html
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: bug-wine(a)sternwelten.at
Tested on a clean "Linux only" wine from Sarge (Debian Gnu/Linux).
The Installer of 'ap_setup.exe' moves new fonts into Windows/Fonts.
Wine seems to use them as default Fonts afterwards.
As the Fonts are astrological symbols the result is rather funny!?
Moving this Fonts out of this dir seems to cure the problem,
but problably wine shouldn't display text with random fonts first?
And the apps probably need that fonts.
Confirmed by the author of the software.
thanks for your attention

Let me be clear about this. I would very much like to modify mozilla in the way
you suggest, However this is not possible unless I have access to the source
code for our implementation of Bugzilla. I had some difficulty with the using
the URL field since it was used primarily with the Keyword Download. I use the
Download Keyword a lot and it was my idea to implement it in the first place.
This is a case of what gives us the greater good and in my opinion integtrating
the AppDB wins.
People looking through the bugs can still download the app and the link to the
AppDB gives them more information and links to other bugs for this app. The
trade off is worth it as far as I'm concerned.

yes, I know I haven't configured my A: and D: symlinks.
DirectX 9.0b is a system requirement for this game. That's probably the
problem. My system does have accelerated 3D, via a GF4MX440.

FYI, there is an extension being discussed right now (proposed by NVIDIA +
3DLabs AFAIK) which is intended to support 'easy' render to texture :
EXT_render_target (see www.opengl.org for a discussion and the specification
(http://www.opengl.org/resources/features/GL_EXT_render_target.txt).
Basically, it's a simplified version of the super buffers extension limited to
render to textures.

This is due to missing support for render to texture (SetRenderTarget). I had
a semi-working implementation for a simple demo but never got it working for
3dmark.
Just for reference:
The real issue is how to get this implemented - pBuffers seem to be about
right, but is it one pbuffer per-render target or a reusable pbuffer. (Each
has its merits and the key is how many complete texture reads/writes are
needed.
An alternative is another GL extension which provides render to texture
support, but since my graphics card didnt support it I couldnt use it!

It's a finnish program for calculating the strength of beams called pupax.
We're still using it as we could use it under wine and its bad user
interface is still better than the awful one of the new program.
The program doesn't work without msvbvm50.dll.
I've tried among other things to comment out all occurrences
of WM_CANCELMODE from the wine source. But that didn't
change a thing, WM_CANCELMODE still happened, so the
problem maybe comes from some interaction with msvbvm50.dll.
The older wine also got

Patch to roll back the change that introduced this regression
This patch reverts the change make to CompareStringW() between revisions 1.25
and 1.26 of wine/dlls/kernel/locale.c.
I identified this change as the cause of the regression by *mindlessly* rolling
back changes until QuArK worked. I have not attempted to *understand* why this
change introduces a problem, or if it should be rolled-back. Therefore, this
patch should be considered a stop-gap, at best. Once I understand the change
in question, I will submit a proper patch to wine-patches(a)winehq.org.
I have tested this patch fixes the regression when applied to the CVS source
from 2004-04-14 and used to run quark-win32-6.4.0alpha3.

I object using the "URL" field of bug reports to point to the appDB entry.
I used this field to link to where to get the reported software.
Let's create another field (like AppDB ref URL or AppInfoURL or the like) for
integration with the AppDB.
This way the keyword "download" may continue to have sense.
