It took over 30 minutes, but eventually the bug happened and TF2 slowed to a crawl. I open up gnome-system-monitor and looked at hl2.exe and wineserver.
When TF2 became insanely laggy, it was using up ~10% CPU, with wineserver using as much as it could get it's hands on. Normally it's ~10 CPU for wineserver and ~50% for TF2.
Something rather odd: the hl2.exe status would start at "Sleeping", a couple seconds later would change to "Stopped", then go back to "Sleeping", etc. This repeated multiple times until my client timed out.
wineserver's status remained at "Running" the whole time.
