So... why doesn't someone just send in a patch to revert the 7cab commit?
Because so far all the evidence suggests this is a driver issue instead of an issue with the commit in question. It may very well be possible to create a workaround for that issue, but that requires finding out what the issue is first, and that requires someone who can reproduce the issue taking a look.
