BTW, the slow performance on high quality demos may be inidcate use of Gallium3D features that are still only supported via the software pipeline.
Just for the record: I'm not using Gallium (when I mentioned Gallium in comment #50 I merely wanted to point out, that Gallium already claims to support a higher OpenGL level, even though part of that is still just a software implementation). I'm using the radeon driver, version 6.12.4 with some updates from Git (see http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-ati/current/changelog#versionversion1:6.12.4-3). So I think if it falls back to software on my system, it would be some Mesa rasterizer (though i was of the opinion that everything up to OpenGL 1.5 is hardware accelerated with this driver). But don't ask me, I'm not an expert for X stuff. ;)
