OK, it seems I was wrong about what the problem actually was, but things are
quite quirky.

My window manager is set to "focus follows mouse" policy with a 0.8s delay.

If I move the mouse in and out of the window a couple times (to a different
window), slowly enough for the focus change to take place, after a random
number of tries (but relatively low) the window eventually gets refreshed.
Alt-tabbing doesn't *seem* to make a difference though.

So, it's not so much a startup delay, but some very odd race which conditions
recently changed...
