I also found that recent wine (last checked was 1.9.20) somehow has the game load d3dx9_31.dll instead of d3dx9_43.dll and d3dcompiler_43.dll. But no difference either way.
There is a renderer engine that comes with Still Life 2: xcDxOldschool.dll, xcDxShader.dll, and xcEngine.dll. I wonder if this is what causes problems interacting with wine. I have Display options set with texture quality and shader quality both high, and anti-aliasing at 4x. Qualities set to low doesn't affect anything, except when anti-aliasing is off, there is a semi-transparent white block covering 1/4 of the screen at top left.
