Having built wine-1.9.14 from source, my problem is resolved.
I suspect that part of the problem came from changes in the FTB directory
structure not being properly handled by the upgrade from V7 to V8 as I had to
delete everything related to the app and rebuild from scratch using 1.9.14 to
get it all to work.

I must say that the wine trace that appears when the app is run from the
command line is extremely helpful.

Without that it would have been extremely difficult to work out which 32-bit
libraries were expected by the app.
