After all updates completed, I installed wine, downloaded the Kindle app installer from Amazon, and ran it under wine. I got the error about unimplemented function msvcp90.dll. But that was before I deleted the manifest file. Sorry about that--I didn't read far enough down in the .xsession-errors file.
After deleting the manifest file, Kindle app started up but stopped responding as soon as I clicked on a book. The message in the pop-up window says "The program Kindle.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close." At this point, wine stops responding, and needs to be terminated. .xsession-errors indicates that wine has encountered an unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x785571df (thread 23). All windows freeze up, and wine has to be terminated.
