The problem mentioned in the nvnews thread is AFAICT unrelated to wine, except to the extent that most (all?) programs run in Wine are 32-bit.
Yes, nearly all apps are 32bit for wine (there is a wine64 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/Wine64), but it isn't usable yet).
So you are using driver 177.82 and couldn't reproduce the memory leak from the nvnews forum?
I couldn't help but notice that 4087 is awfully close to the 32-bit limit. However, I can get into the 3GB range for virtual memory just by running notepad.exe.
Yes, I've seen that, too. Probably there is another problem which should be investigated (see http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=4101 32bit 2,6GB vs 64bit 3,6GB). A good starting point is the test attached here http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13335#c140 .
I guess all are different problems which show all the same result. In combination they arrive after a different time. For users which hit all bugs, they couldn't even start a game (see bug 17216) and others which hit only some of them could run the game at least some time. So it's not so easy with the dupes!
