FYI for those just wanting to play the game: 
Reverting commit 305a315a2588cc1f386d1bf6749ec940de55ced4 allows the game to
work under wine-8.21.

Obviously that's not an ideal solution for wine, but if someone wants to use it
as a workaround until this bug gets fixed (given wine 9.0's imminent
code-freeze), it is an option.
