If you've stopped trying to get Wine upstream to support pulse, this whole discussion is moot. So much for the "developer willing to maintain" argument.
I am, outside of wine currently.
But you're not willing to submit your patches upstream, so you're not willing to maintain it as a part of Wine (which is what the argument against "developer willing to maintain" is).
Problem with writing a proof-of-concept for the wine project is that while it may be better, it will be regarded as too large a change and rejected unless it could be done incrementally. It's hard to make a horse and buggy into an automobile without being allowed to replace logical parts in their entirety.
Defeatism isn't healthy. You don't know until you try. If it is possible, it would as you say make *all* sound drivers easier to maintain, and I'm sure the core devs would consider such an improvement seriously.
