To reproduce:
work around all-white-login-screen bug by installing ie6. When you get the "ActiveX control" warning; say Yes. Click on the 'No thanks, just take me to the demo' button on the lower right. It then shows the second launcher screen, the one that is supposed to have the nice animation bringing up the "play now" button. This animation doesn't work, but you can still click where the button should be.
At this point it should show the intro movie, but no video is shown, and the game crashes after a few notes of music.
winetricks d3dx9_36 works around the problem.
The log shows a few calls to d3dx9_36.D3DXMatrixTransformation, a few calls to d3dx9_36.D3DXMatrixMultiply, and then
