A # prompt normally indicates you are running as root. You shouldn't.
Don't worry. I didn't. There is only a '#' because I added it manually before posting my commands in here.
You are also not starting the app correctly. When using the full unix-style path, you need to use wine start /unix so Wine can set the working directory. If you don't, apps that expect to be started from the directory in which they are installed will fail. https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User%27s_Guide#Using_wine_start
Ah, okay. I didn't know that was the expected thing to do. In any case previously it worked fine for Kindle without it.
Try again in a clean wineprefix as a normal user with wine start /unix.
Tried it. Still the same.
