BTW, I conducted the following experiment: I had hw:0 locked by speaker-test, so PulseAudio would not be able to grab it (PA0.9.x in Ubuntu Lucid). Nevertheless, the render test had PulseAudio open and write almost a buffer full of samples. Then padding remained frozen at the same value. There never was any error message.
Does your Pulseaudio server use module-detect or module-udev-detect ?
with only on-board , PA server may load module-null-sink when it cannot find any sound card
after the pulseaudio server is stopped ,if your HDA on-board has analog out and digital out, can you play one stream to analog out and another stream to digital out at the same time
