USB soundcard (the only one I was able to make work after fooling around with pulseaudio etc.) did get through the training but crashed after a very short time. It does appear to be either a new method of alsa or kernel interacting with wine. I managed to get sound out of all my cards, and here's how I did it. I re-installed the system again, and this time upgraded to the experimental version of the kernel, which I was assured would correct the current sound problems with my other two (non-USB) cards. I then upgraded to the most current alsa-libs and alsa-drivers. Now sound works everywhere using Audacity without pulseaudio (even on my experimental X-fi driver), but wine still freezes.
