After some experimenting, I found that the cursor issue in 1.3.31 resolves by
setting a registry entry under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver

[Software\Wine\X11 Driver]

"ClientSideWithRender"="N"

Though I note that this setting is not recommended as a default setting by the
WINE developers,

It also does not resolve the problems rendering some games, though other apps
appear to work normally. It might be worth noting I use the legacy Nvidia 96xx
driver.
