--- Comment #9 from Justin Soulia rockinup1231@gmail.com 2008-09-23 19:49:04 --- I know it's been a very long time since I last mentioned anything on the status of this bug. Unfortunately I didn't have access to my machine all summer, but I finally got to test it again.
3DS Max 7 under Wine-1.1.5 will load properly with the new instructions I placed in the app's HOWTO. It still involves moving the Combustion plugin files out of the stdplugs folder, but it doesn't seem to actually have any part in the dynamic lighting or coloring of geometry.
Under Software Rendering everything I tested and toyed with seemed to work fine, but I also tried toying with 3D Hardware rendering using DirectX. Both 9.0 and 8.1 modes work, but 9.0 mode renders all the objects in the Perspective viewport as black. Under 8.1 however, objects render and are colored properly. However, if you try to toy with any of the tools that adjust your point of view in the Perspective viewport, the program crashes. I found that following one of the several tutorials around the internet to install the native DirectX 9.0c solved this problem.
My machine doesn't have a DX9 compatible video card (an old nVidia GeForce 4000 MX), and uses the legacy accelerated video card drivers. Can someone try running the program with the HOWTO instructions for the app, that actually has a computer running a DX9 compatible card with the newer drivers? This would help make sure that the lockups with Wine's built-in DirectX aren't tied into my legacy video card drivers.
