sry, but imo pasuspender/padsp are non-solutions as for me they break more than they fix.
Sorry, but IMO, pulse is a non-solution because it breaks more than it fixes.
I can give them a demo-system with non-working alsa-driver (as it kills other audio streams) and working pulse-driver.
Sounds like your dmix is broken, in which case you're comparing apples and oranges.

Also by definition if you can't create a native Pulse driver, then operating through the abstraction layer would be worse because you lose access to native knobs and twiddles. An abstraction layer can't offer more than the native.
The question remains, are those knobs and twiddles actually necessary for a fully-functional ALSA driver? So far no one has answered that question.
