I tried -nogamedll, which seemed to let it get a little bit further, judging from the console output. Unfortunately, I hit the R6025 error dialog that the Windows users are also having problems with, but I think there is a small possibility that this might be a workaround for the problem discussed here.
If anyone is wondering, the extra lines in the console that it printed were these:

Oh, and I did NOT have steam running while I was doing this. I don't know if that would make any difference.
