Sound does indeed work, but it seems that the number of simultaneous sounds is limited. If for example background music is playing, you are running, and you hit a monster, you hear the music, your foot steps, your sword swing, the sound of the monster being hit, and your character going "oofff". The sounds become choppy and switch from one to another, as if it can't play all of them at the same time. There is an in game setting for the number of concurrent sounds, but this does not seem to change anything.
