What happens when you try to launch it without the patches? I'm wondering if it's failing for a wholly unrelated reason. If it runs without the patches could you try with just applying patch 1?
Well, one good piece of news is that it fails even on a fresh checkout now. It may be that the patches are working (before they were exiting with assertion failures or compiler errors), and now the real problem with my setup is showing. However, like others, I'm just on 64-bit Arch Linux, so not sure what the differences are...
