Nothing wrong with xrandr or anything like that. However the ability to lock gamma might be nice in case other games want to change it within a virtual desktop and the game doesn't have a switch, if that is something that Wine should be doing.
Oh, and thanks for the Diablo II switch, it's much better than a virtual desktop.
