Also works in wine-1.9.19. (Removed the wine-staging package and installed
plain wine; created new wineprefix same as before)

also forgot to list these steps in last comment:
winetricks -q ie8
ran wine skype /username:username /password:password

(/legacylogin doesn't seem to work anymore? maybe it was removed)

I'm in process of building wine-stable (1.8.4). I'll post the results once i
have them.
