You can press ⌥⌘Q while the game is hanging and it will exit instantly, so the event loop is clearly still going. But it does use about 200% of the CPU. I'll attach a sample.
The only interesting thing I've found when using warn+d3d is that the continuous stream of warnings generated while displaying the menus, loading screen, and game stops when the loading screen freezes.
