Setting the registry key 'ClientSideGraphics=N' under HKCU\Software\Wine\X11 Driver works around the problem for me and zooming in/out with the mousewheel is smooth again. (http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys)

It can be disabled by setting "ClientSideGraphics"="n".
