It happens in specific places on the map. Also in multiplayer, but in this mode the game is still playable, because you don't fall down endless, just a little and you can jump out of the "hole".
Indeed, confirming this is the case with 1.1.42 & 1.1.43 as well..although I do still fall a long way, it is at least possible to get out of the "hole" as you put it (I call it "SkyboxLand" ;) ... perhaps the positional data being fed to the process from the server-side helps here?...strange indeed..
Back in single player mode, second mission, I actually stumbled upon a small line of ingress that lets me get past the point where falling thru the floor occurs. In this area of the map, I found the collision detection -very- flaky and it was possible to look thru textures (walls objects etc) & into the skybox area just about everywhere...it's possible to move into stationary objects/buildings here and then fall thru the floor - most frustrating ;)
