The "controls get disabled" problem has occured for me too, but it only happens
when the hosting computer of a multiplayer game doesn't have the proper ports
open.

When this happens I usually just kick them from the server and I get the
controls again; otherwise, it takes many, many minutes to get them back, if at
all.  (Usually never.)

I then procede to gently remind my friends of their network situation.  :]
