I hate to suggest the classic Windows solution, but have you tried rebooting? I've experienced a similar problem running the benchmark (1GB GeForce 9500 GT, same driver), but it only happens occasionally, and it generally fixes itself after a reboot. There may be some code path used in Wine's Direct3D implementation that triggers a bug in the driver.
Funny you mention that. I turned on my computer last night and ran it for kicks, and the characters rendered fine. I quit and started it back up and it was back to the mess. I tried a third time and it went black after the SquareEnix logo after hitting play and then never went further. This third case then became the normal behavior, rarely going back to the mess state, even after another reboot.
