wine1.8 works, too.
The problem is caused by the selection in the installer where the documents created by the program will be stored (called "Steuerfallordner"). I've always chosen an nfs mounted share on a QNAP server.
Leaving the default option lets the update finish without error. The setting can later be changed in the program (hopefully without breaking the update tool again).
Maybe something to note in the AppDB article...
