Before reporting I've tried to make it run somehow, cleaning the prefix and
reinstalling several times; the installation takes awfully long time and I've
found that it doesn't really care one way or the other whether it was
installed, as long as it's run from its root directory, so I just copied the
game tree away from the prefix and stopped installing after each clean prefix.

Same thing happens in standard install, though.
