--- Comment #24 from Marc-Olivier Barre marco@marcochapeau.org 2009-07-16 06:10:25 --- After some days fiddling around I finally found a new lead to follow... by inadvertence of course.
I happen to be re-coding the winejack driver (because honestly, it's a piece of copy-pasted crap). I have been testing my modifications until now by playing EVE. I still have no input for voice chat, but output works just good.
How is that related to our bug ? Well, since I stopped using the ALSA backend, I stopped seeing crashes. Yesterday I played nearly 8 hours straight doing all the things that usually end up with a crash at some point, including big combats... Could that be it ?
It sure needs more testing. Could the people hitting this issue try to disable ALSA completely ? You don't necessarily need to use the JACK backend (you won't be able to on Gentoo 64 unless you ask me how), you just need to disabled audio support in winecfg. It should do the trick.
Note: Disabling sound in the game is not enough since the driver gets loaded anyways.
