Bug #: 29810 Summary: binkw32 crashes in Dragon Age: Origins Product: Wine Version: 1.4-rc2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Mac OS X Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ovvldc@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 38715 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=38715 Dragon Age: Origins crash backtrace
Dragon Age: Origins crashes just after character creation. Backtrace says is crashed in:
binkw32 (+0x17a54) (0x16161515) 0x18017a54: movl %esi,0x0(%ecx)
This has been a problem for some time. I am running under Wineskin 2.5.3. Installed Dragon Age:Origins and 1.04 patch.
Used Winetricks with:
d3dx9 dotnet2.0 physx vcrun2005 DirectDrawRenderer = gdi Multisampling = enabled PixelShaderMode = enabled RenderTargetLockMode = auto UseGLSL = disabled
(skill & talent buttons do not render with GLSL=enabled, and crash still occurs)
DragonAge.ini settings:
ResolutionWidth=1152 ResolutionHeight=720 FullScreen=1 UseVSync=1 GraphicsDetailLevel=0 AntialiasingLevel=0 TexturePack=0 EnableFrameBufferEffects=0 DisableMRT=1 UseStereoSound=1
(i.e. as low detail as I could make DAO)

--- Comment #1 from Oscar van Vliet ovvldc@gmail.com 2012-02-05 15:26:08 CST --- Adding regression comments because the game used to work in Wineskin in the 1.2 days.

--- Comment #2 from Oscar van Vliet ovvldc@gmail.com 2012-02-05 15:40:26 CST --- Forgot to mention: windows version was set to win2k (i.e. Windows 2000 SP 4) before installation, other Winetricks were done after installation.

--- Comment #3 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr 2012-02-05 15:54:49 CST --- If it is a regression, where is the regression test?

--- Comment #4 from Oscar van Vliet ovvldc@gmail.com 2012-02-05 17:34:57 CST --- Sorry, nothing that detailed. Just mentioning that it used to work and now it doesn't. Regression in the broad sense of the word..
I hope the backtrace is useful. It might also be a Mac X11 problem..

--- Comment #6 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy-bugzilla@kievinfo.com 2012-02-06 08:18:24 CST --- First of all we do not support 3rd party Wine wrappers. Use plain Wine. Otherwise please contact wineskin support.
Second, do not use winetricks unless explicitly asked to do so here. Or point to the bug ## you working around.
3rd if problem still exists, attach complete terminal output, not just a crash.

Sorry, nothing that detailed. Just mentioning that it used to work and now it doesn't. Regression in the broad sense of the word..
If you don't remember what was the first working version, you can find it by installing wine binary packages and testing. Afterwards, you regression test can begin...

--- Comment #8 from Oscar van Vliet ovvldc@gmail.com 2012-02-10 16:05:45 CST --- Sorry, I don't have the resources to go bisecting..
Feel free to close the bug, I just wanted to let you know DAO isn't quite working cleanly on Mac yet.. the GLSL enabled or disabled may be the easiest to check for someone else.

If you can't follow the instructions on http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting (did you try? You can always ask on the forum for help), you could at least try with wine binary version, which don't necessitate full compiles, and report the last wine version where it worked.
The forum (http://forum.winehq.org/) and IRC channel (http://wiki.winehq.org/IRC) can both be helpful.
Please not that it's hard/time-consuming for devs to do regression testings, especially when the program is not freely available...

--- Comment #10 from Frédéric Delanoy frederic.delanoy@gmail.com 2012-02-10 16:59:10 CST --- Please provide the full console log, and not just the crash backtrace.
Also I see there's a 1.05 patch on the site (http://social.bioware.com/page/da-patches). Did/Could you try with the updated version?

--- Comment #11 from Oscar van Vliet ovvldc@gmail.com 2012-02-28 13:35:46 CST --- I've tried without dlls and with the 1.5 patch and some combinations of dlls and all I got was more crashes :(.
Further systematic investigation will have to wait until some two weeks, so will probably be too late for 1.4.
@Vitaliy: with terminal output, do you mean the console log? If there is anything specific in a debug run I should look for I would be happy to try.

--- Comment #15 from Oscar van Vliet ovvldc@gmail.com 2012-04-19 08:55:16 CDT --- Here is more data, I hope it is useful.
I managed to reproduce this crash with only *msvcr2008 set to 'builtin, native' and two Direct3D overrides: 'StrictDrawOrdering=enabled', to avoid flickering, and 'UseGLSL=disabled' to avoid earlier crashes.
The crash seems to happen just as the first in-game movie with binkw32 starts playing.
I actually used to get further than this, but I figured this would be a good place to start
