After trying the latest windows genuine advantage I found that it will still validate wine as genuine, however because of a bug in msxml3 it will not give back the code it created. It doesn't return an error on native msxml, so it seems to be a bug in wine's implementation.

Running in git tells me that my version of Windows is too new for this update to install. Using native msxml3 makes no difference.
