Summary: Screenshots black or sheared for DirectX games Product: Wine Version: 0.9.56. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-ddraw AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: wine@ibboard.co.uk
Originally posted at http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=298 as a request for whether it could be fixed through config etc.
I'm trying to take screenshots of the Dawn of War game through Wine. The game runs fine with Wine and under Windows it has a built-in screenshot function that dumps a JPEG to a sub-folder.
Under Wine the game never gets the print screen request because Compiz or Metacity hijack the signal first and start Gnome-Screenshot. Sometimes the screenshot is okay, but other times the screenshot has shearing/artifacting it in, presumably because the trooper in the game moved before the screenshot app could copy the whole image buffer.
If I change the key bindings so that nothing is intercepting the print screen then I do get a screenshot in the folder as expected, but it is pure black and so isn't very useful.
Apparently this is a bug that has been fixed before. I've assumed it is some form of DirectX issue.
Graphics: Radeon X800XL with FGLRX v8.3 using AIGLX on XOrg server 7.3 OS: Fedora 8 Wine: 0.9.56 from Fedora repos Tested under: Compiz-Fusion and Metacity Success rate: Occasional for Gnome-Screenshot. Some screenshots only have minor shearing/artifacting and are usable, others are terrible.
Example screenshots can be provided if necessary.

--- Comment #1 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-10-17 15:37:16 --- Is this still a problem in current (1.1.6 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #2 from IBBoard wine@ibboard.co.uk 2008-10-18 05:06:55 --- I've not got 1.1.6 yet, only 1.1.5 from the Fedora repos, but some quick testing shows it's actually worse now in Dawn of War.
If I use Compiz as my window manager then I get a black screen with my screenshots. If I use Metacity I get a shot of the desktop behind the game. Screenshots used to generally work well under Compiz, except for the shearing if the object moved.
I'll try some more tests out soon.

--- Comment #3 from IBBoard wine@ibboard.co.uk 2008-10-25 14:15:56 --- I've installed 1.1.6 from Fedora's "testing" repos and screenshots now take pictures of the game (unlike the last test with 1.1.5 - I don't know why) but I still get shearing with the Gnome screenshot tool. I'll attach screenshots in a minute.
Disabling the Compiz and Gnome capture of the Print Screen button still results in a pure black screen using both Compiz and Metacity as window managers.
I'm now using an nVidia 7950GT with the 173.14.12 drivers installed from Livna and kernel 2.6.26.6.
Thanks.

Just to make sure I don't end up causing confusion: This shearing is purely in the screenshots. I don't notice any shearing in-game, just in the screenshots.
