I suspect this bug is invalid/cracked version.

I installed the game from the disc and have tried both Steam from Winetricks and the Disc. The disc is a UK edition. I am willing to provide any more details necessary.

This is a Mono error, you probably need a native version of .NET.

--- Comment #8 from Samu Voutilainen samu.voutilainen@kolumbus.fi 2010-12-04 04:53:48 CST --- One comment: CivV is supposed to run through Steam, not using the binary that exists in CivV directory, because there is some kind of path thingys and such which I don’t really know it wants. There is a patch for that, so the problem is same for Windows, I suppose.

--- Comment #9 from Adam Martinson amartinson@codeweavers.com 2010-12-09 02:33:57 CST --- I've been testing this, and I can't reproduce the error. What I did: $ winetricks corefonts flash ... $ wine msiexec /i SteamInstall.msi ... Then just installed Civ 5 through Steam and everything seemed to work fine. For those of you who get the bug, what do you have installed in the Wine prefix, and what overrides (if any) are you using?

They seem to be running CivV directly through the CivV.exe, you did it through Steam.exe, right? Former will mess up paths and output some fun errors.

OK, confirming a crash when launching with CivilizationV.exe or Launcher.exe. Opening Steam, selecting Civ V and clicking "Play" works fine.
Easiest way to reproduce is using Steam's applaunch feature: wine Steam.exe -login username password -applaunch 8930
will run Civ5 if installed. This reliably fails for me. If I run steam normally, then click play, it will fail a few times and eventually work, but only if I compile wine with gcc 4.5 (4.3.4 fails). Steam community is disabled.

--- Comment #14 from Samu Voutilainen samu.voutilainen@kolumbus.fi 2010-12-10 02:40:05 CST --- I don’t know how that applaunch should work, it just logs me in and launches Steam... I don’t seem to get any proper output to console either.
wine winebrowser steam://rungameid/8930
This just pops up a windows and immediately returns.

--- Comment #15 from Matthew Bauer mjbauer95@gmail.com 2010-12-11 17:53:13 CST --- This seems to be an issue specific to the ATI drivers. I am able to run the game on NVIDIA with Wine, but when I try to run it with a computer with ATI, it crashes on startup. When running it on plain Windows (I'm not sure what the graphics card is) it crashes on startup also.
Has anyone with an ATI card gotten Civilization 5 to work in Wine?

--- Comment #16 from Samu Voutilainen samu.voutilainen@kolumbus.fi 2010-12-11 18:06:50 CST --- I actually remember some other reports related CivV not working with ATI users at actual appdb. So I suppose CivV just doesn’t work with ATI using Wine, I managed to overlook that fact, sorry.

--- Comment #18 from Gweltas g.denece@numericable.fr 2010-12-12 05:06:53 CST --- I'm experiencing very often the same issue with a Nvidia card (almost 9 tries to 10). I get this output after having launched Steam without any trace (and then launched CivV with traces). I also tried to get a full +relay trace with Steam also and I never succeeded in reproducing the crash (the game launches successfully).
Kind of memory overheap ?

Could you paste command line output from wine Steam.exe to launch (and crash) of the game?
Have you tried the mini-HOWTO at CivV page? http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=21465

Random crashes at startup or at actual game? Random in meaning it works one time, and second time crashes?

Hmm... Only indicator of it is that output at console? I think I get it myself too, but I’ve disregarded it as Steam is Steam and I don’t trust it that much to work well.
Anyway, I wonder if this report has few different bugs inside now, one about ATI’s crashing one this one which is randomly crashing civv at startup?

--- Comment #29 from Gweltas g.denece@numericable.fr 2011-03-21 12:10:44 CDT --- I've installed the 1.217 patch and I was still experiencing some random crashes !
And then I've just realized that I could update my own mono version without expecting any new release from wine. I've used the standard winetricks mono210 and since that, I've experience no more crashes !
So it seems that the main issue was not a wine issue. I will test further the next days to be sure that no crash still occurs. Thanks a lot for this trick !
