I'm write, that I use that driver. Because it's any one who support 3d acceleration for R500 or more chips.
Drivers: x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.476 ( ati-driver-installer-8-4-x86.x86_64.run )
I's the fresh driver.

--- Comment #12 from Raghav Sethi raghavsethi.rs@gmail.com 2009-09-13 03:14:13 --- Half Life 2 will work if you change rendering mode to Software. This is a temporary workaround only as software mode is horrible slow.

--- Comment #13 from William J May may.11b@runbox.com 2010-01-17 02:16:11 --- I have a problem with this same description, although by "load" my case means the "loading to game menu". Wine and Steam stay running, but the game itself crashes to desktop. A solution to get past it was setting the -nosound option from Steam. And then the game plays all the way through.
I just tried using 'pasuspender' to no avail. I am using PulseAudio on Mandriva 2010. (Kernel 2.6.31.6 Wine 1.1.36 fglrx 8.68.2/9.12) And since 2009, it copes well with Wine set to OSS.
Other games like 'Homeworld: Cataclysm' and 'F.E.A.R.' don't seem to have this problem at all. (Wine+OSS -> PulseAudio)
Steam games maybe expect lower-level access for sound???

--- Comment #14 from William J May may.11b@runbox.com 2010-04-27 02:39:52 --- After further trial and error, HL2 runs perfectly when Wine sound driver is set to ALSA. Mandriva 2010 has a good implementation of PulseAudio, so switching from OSS (in winecfg) is as simple as a click for me.
Not 'fixed' just workaround for those who can use it.

--- Comment #15 from Dmitry Grigoriev mail@dimgel.ru 2010-10-03 09:54:10 CDT --- I confirm original subject. Gentoo amd64, wine 1.3.3.
HL2, Episodes 1 & 2 silently exit after "loading" progress bar reaches 100% and also when I try to assign different key (F5 instead of F6) to QuickSave.
Lost Coast works perfectly. All games successfully play scenes under main menu, with sound.

I can confirm exactly the same behaviour on Fedora 13, Wine 1.3.4, Linux 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686.PAE. Lost Coast works, HL2 itself doesn't.

--- Comment #18 from Dmitry Grigoriev mail@dimgel.ru 2011-10-28 09:46:57 CDT --- It's already OK in 1.3.27 (Gentoo amd64), sorry I forgot to report. All Steam games I have (including HL2*, L4D2, Rage, Dragon Age) work stable and fine.
Well, except desktop mouse pointer is shown instead of game's one (pretty annoying in Dragon Age), but it's another bug. :)
