Summary: Starcraft: unable to install from the CD - CPU goes to 63% Product: Wine Version: 0.9.52. Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-programs AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: louis@qdcec.co.za
I have used the Fedora 7 x86_64 builds of 0.9.49, 0.9.51 and 0.9.52. In all three cases I am unable to install Starcraft from the original CD (v1.00). (I was able to install it on an older version under Fedora Core 6 x86_64.)
When I double click the setup.exe file, the CD spins up, reads, pauses, reads again, stops reading the CD, and then the CPU runs at about 77% contstantly, with the following processes: 14730 ? Rs 0:19 /usr/lib/../bin/wineserver 14742 ? Sl 0:14 D:\install.exe 14744 ? Ssl 0:00 c:\windows\system32\explorer.exe /desktop
And from top you see that wineserver and install.exe take 35% and 27% of the CPU respectively: 14730 louis 20 0 4232 1856 628 R 35.3 0.2 0:34.48 wineserver 14742 louis 20 0 3620m 9320 6556 S 27.3 0.9 0:26.80 install.exe

Don't run the app this way. cd to the directory and run it with 'wine setup.exe'.
Attach terminal output here please.

--- Comment #2 from Louis louis@qdcec.co.za 2008-01-04 17:38:25 --- Hi. I ran the app from terminal by cd'ing to /media/STARCRAFT. I then execute 'wine setup.exe' The CD spins up and I am immediately returned to the prompt. Nothing is logged to the current terminal screen, and the three processes I reported above are "running" with the same CPU utilizations I mentioned in the call. It is as if the install program is "running" but without sound or video. Even running it using the syntax wine explorer /desktop=starcraft,640x480 setup does not work. I get a blue "desktop" window, but otherwise nothing is different.

Try running it with: $ WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid wine setup.exe &> /tmp/log.txt
And attach /tmp/log.txt here. If it's too big: $ bzip2 -9 /tmp/log.txt And attach log.txt.bz2 here.

Ran: WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid wine setup.exe &> /tmp/log.txt The file kept growing and growing until I killed the same three processes. The 96 MB output file has been bzipped to 384 kB.

--- Comment #5 from Louis louis@qdcec.co.za 2008-01-16 16:16:12 --- I have just installed the following (and it's associated files) from the Fedora Testing Patches site: wine-0.9.53-2.fc7.i386.rpm
The behavior is identical -- except that the CPU is being used MORE intensively than before.

--- Comment #7 from Louis louis@qdcec.co.za 2008-03-13 20:01:27 --- Hi all.
The problem has been solved. Allow a little history to explain what happened.
My original CD had been damaged (though use) and so I downloaded a disk image through a torrent site. The image file was a .bin and .cue pair. I burned these using a Linux, but I am not sure what I did. The CD mounts and all appears OK, but as a test, I tried to install from this same CD onto a Windows box and experienced the SAME problem I logged the call for.
After using bchunk to convert the image to an ISO and then re-burning it, I now have a working installation.
Sorry for the inconvenience to you all, and thank you for your patience.
Louis
