Summary: installation succeeds, running fails -- "the program X has encountered a serious problem and needs to close" Product: Wine Version: 1.1.26 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl
I try to run PWN Polish Dictionary (v.3.0) using wine. Using virtualbox everything fine, but using wine only installation works OK. When executing installed program I get windows program error: the program X has encountered a serious problem and needs to close
with wine explanation below (the same dialog).
Exactly the same behaviour I see for another program -- SuperMemo UX. I will attach logs for both of them.

Where is E:? Did you install this under wine? Or are you running it from a windows partition?

--- Comment #4 from Maciej Pilichowski bluedzins@wp.pl 2009-07-30 11:02:55 --- Austin, E: is drive next to C:
~/.wine/drive_c/ ~/.wine/drive_e/
the second directory is for E:, first one for C: -- it is on linux partition, configured using winecfg. I use E: for installing all apps, "just in case", and I don't touch C: at all.

--- Comment #9 from Maciej Pilichowski bluedzins@wp.pl 2009-07-31 10:06:32 --- Actually it is (older though), and I suspect where the problem is. Here is the download: http://www.supermemo.eu/supermemo_ux#download
now, please note, that under download button there is a section about downloading .net package. So in free version you have to do it yourself.
In "full" version it is all bundled together (installation is one step) -- I tried to install free version, and .net package does not install, and supermemo installs but crashes as before.
So I suspect this -- full version installs, but .net does not installs (just as it is installed, tried to, in standalone version). That is why supermemo crashes (it *JUST* is my wild guess) -- lack of .net.

--- Comment #10 from Maciej Pilichowski bluedzins@wp.pl 2009-07-31 11:01:41 --- OK, now with winetricks everything is in place, net installed, supermemo installed, it does not crash, but simply don't start. It silently quits at some point.
To start with winetricks I removed old ~/.wine and run winecfg to create new config.
Log follows.

--- Comment #13 from Maciej Pilichowski bluedzins@wp.pl 2009-07-31 14:31:02 --- Btw. at that point (i.e. after using winetricks) full version and free version behaves differently. Full version still does not work, while free version launches correctly (it display user login dialog).

Download link looks busted, please update. Is this still an issue in current (1.3.19 or newer) wine?
I just downloaded the latest version of Wine as of today and tried to install Supermemo 2006 full version and it does not work. Whenever I try to run it I get the error message:
"The program sm2006.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
When I acknowledge this is brings up the follow error message:
"Runtime error 255 at 7BC2F977"

I thought I was deleting the past comment but apparently there is no way to do so, I realized I was not using Wine but a similar program so the bug may not be accurate.

Something is wrong with built-in shdocvw.dll, in addition to dotnet20 'winetricks -q ie7' makes the application run.
