Summary: Doctor Who - The Adventure Games crashes with wine 1.3.7 and higher Product: Wine Version: 1.3.7 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: robert2505@gmail.com
From wine .1.3.7 and on (i'm currently running wine 1.3.9) the Doctor Who
Adventure Games crash almost immediately. Up untill wine 1.3.6 it runs fine (except for the mouse issue reported in bug 6971)
I'm running wine-wow64 on top of archlinux x86_64, but in a win32 wineprefix, so i figured that would qualify as a x86 wine setup.
The attached log file contains all output that WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid wine DoctorWho_Pc.exe gave me.

On kde 4.5.4 (the desktop i use) it crashes, but only with wine 1.3.7 and up. I hope this information will be of some help to you.

--- Comment #10 from Henri Verbeet hverbeet@gmail.com 2011-09-15 15:56:27 CDT --- The result of that regression test is somewhat suspicious, particularly considering that you mention the desktop environment used makes a difference. Could you verify that 179e26b3f1997bd6442a4e32b3acf991a1a09923 works and f0b0c1b1dddf606177651deb45c0afd6259076aa is broken? Assuming that's the case, could you create a "+d3d9,+d3d,+d3d_surface,+seh,+tid" log with current git or 1.3.28? Unfortunately I can't download the game myself, since I'm outside the UK.

===============================================
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 Laptop running 64bit Linux Mint Debian Edition 201109 (update pack 3).
The laptop has ATI Radeon M92 (HD 4500 / 5000) graphics.
LMDE is based on Debian testing and because at present there is no WINE in the testing repositories, I have installed 1.3.30 from:
http://frickelplatz.de/debian/
This seems to work fine: I can run LTspiceIV perfectly.
However ...
I have tried to install a game from the BBC Doctor Who series:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/theadventuregames/download/tardis/Install-TAR...
According to the WINE AppDB this should run OK.
Installation seemed to run OK.
The first attempt to run it got me a full screen startup first all black then a screen split into a black/white triangle along a diagonal line which finally turned into a largely black screen with a scrambled cursor and no clear picture of anything.
Once that point was reached I couldn't then close the window with the program in it. The cursor only appeared in any window decorations and the main Linux menu/taskbar bar. The machine ran very slow and I had to use the System Monitor to kill the DoctorWho_pc.exe which then also killed wine.
The intro music played fine so I assumed the problem was to do with the graphics.
I tried configuring wine to run a virtual desktop but that just framed the whole thing in a virtual desktop and didn't change anything else.
Unfortunately I didn't capture any log file info from those attempts.
I then wondered if the problem might be with the linux native ATI Radeon graphics drivers so I installed fglrx-driver.deb and associated .debs from Synaptic.
This seems to have made things worse because now all that happens when I try to run the program is that a window pops open and then closes immediately. If I set it to run in a virtual desktop then I get the blue virtual desktop for a second or two, a white flash in that then it all closes again.
I have posted to the forum
http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=14045&start=0&postdays=0&...
and had a couple of suggestions:
Upgraded to 1.3.32 (from frickelplatz);
Removed:
fglrx-atieventsd fglrx-driver fglrx-glx fglrx-glx-ia32 fglrx-module-dkms glx-alternative-fglrx
then reinstalled the same;
Tried uninstalling the game from wine and reinstalling.
No joy. same problem.
As far as I know, the fglrx debs are effectively the same as the driver downloaded directly from AMD.
I have attached the results of running:
WINEDEBUG=+synchronous wine wholauncher.exe
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25499
--- Comment #13 from signalitymail-winebugzilla@yahoo.co.uk 2011-11-20 14:33:27 CST --- Fixed it.
From Synaptic, I reinstalled:
fglrx-atieventsd fglrx-driver fglrx-glx fglrx-glx-ia32 fglrx-module-dkms glx-alternative-fglrx
only this time I opened the "Details" window and spotted the lines at the bottom that said something like:
"driver installed but not yet configured, suggest you edit some file or other (in etc/ I think).
trying sudo aticonfig --initial may work!
So I did:
sudo aticonfig --initial
Nothing seemed to change but the game now runs.
It's playable but the mouse cursor is very erratic and it is difficult to click on the right place because it jumps around after you point at something. The workaround described here:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=21268
doesn't seem to help.
BTW: The laptop now runs much cooler, the fan doesn't run full blast and the battery life is about 1.5 time longer than it was before I installed and configured the fglrx-driver.

Retry in wine 1.3.33, some mouse bugs were fixed and specially a laptop touchpad cursor problem.
