Summary: Spore Creature Creator Trial Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ghoti2007@gmail.com
Interface buttons are not being rendered. The main screen with the galaxy simply shows the galaxy (which is very bright).
You can click around and actually click the buttons (new creature or load creature) you just cannot see them.
In the editor, the same applies, the creature and background renders, but the interface to the left does not. Moving the mouse over the buttons shows the button, but they are invisible until you rollover them.
(This is my first bug report, I am new to this contributing thing, please be kind and thanks!)

I assume that has something to do with the galaxy rendering way too bright? Just a guess.

Click randomly around the top right corner of that pop up, and you will eventually close it. Then click just to the right of the center of the galaxy for the creature creator.

Still searching for hope somewhere, but I fear we are at the mercy of someone who knows what they are doing to see and try to whack at this bug.
The trial's gui is messed up, and the retail version (I bought it for the kid on their windows box) doesn't start at all in wine.

I'm a c/c++ programmer with some OpenGL experience... the part thats tough for me is that I haven't had the exposure to Direct X enough or to the nuts and bolts of wine to contribute on my own. I guess I can email the last maintainer of the direct X stuff... Anyone have some suggestions?

No, MAC users are experiencing the same issues as well - bright galaxy and no UI. We both experience the same bug, so there is definitely an issue.
Some have had very limited success by altering a file in spore, or a registry entry, neither worked for me.

I don't believe you're completely correct; I can't speak for all mac users, but I am able to run the Spore Creature Creator trial with no problems on my MacBook Air. I am aware that Spore on Mac is unsupported on some video cards, but that there is a workaround (see tuaw's June 17th article)

Sorry, you are correct. That article is what I saw a few nights ago and just typed before I thought.
So we are affected by a bug that is only affected in unsupported video card in Cider? I know my video card is sufficient, I run the trial and retail in windows with full settings and not a blip...

--- Comment #25 from Eric Betts bettse@eecs.orst.edu 2008-06-29 21:19:31 --- When I run SporeCC on my mac, I see 3 different logo screens appear before the galaxy spiral, while with the latest wine.git I only see the first EA notice about copyright. I believe this also may be a symptom of the same underlying condition as this bug. During the times when I would expect the new logo screens to appears, I see the message, "fixme:d3d_texture:IWineD3DBaseTextureImpl_ApplyStateChanges Unrecognized or unsupported D3DSAMP_MINFILTER value 3 D3DSAMP_MIPFILTER value 3" between a large number of repitions of "fixme:imm:ImmGetOpenStatus (0x1427c0): semi-stub". I see this same message almost constantly while the game is running.
The ApplyStateChanges message is produced by code in wine/dlls/wined3d/basetexture.c that does bounds checking on what texture filter modes wine supports. The value of 3 for D3DSAMP_MIPFILTER corresponds to anisotropic filtering, which is supported by D3DSAMP_MINFILTER but not D3DSAMP_MIPFILTER. In order to correct for this lack of support, the code right after this check assigns the filter to the highest value between NONE and the highest level of filter it(wine) supports. In this case it would be, I believe, WINED3DTEXF_LINEAR for WINED3DTEXSTA_MIPFILTER(the wine version of D3DSAMP_MIPFILTER).
Please be aware that this is just my rough and possibly incorrect understanding of what is going on. It also completely irrelevant to solving this bug.

--- Comment #27 from Andrew Fenn andrewfenn@gmail.com 2008-07-14 22:14:53 --- I am not so sure that it is the mipmapping which is causing the issue which Eric pointed out might be the cause. Surely the mipmap option shouldn't end up with it not displaying the UI at all as it just deals with the way the images are blended when stretched? (or something along those lines)
I think it has something to do with the shaders, the contrast on the game is extremely high. For example on the first screen that pops up when running the demo there is a spore cartoon background, but it's barely visible and the black text is grey. Perhaps this is a completely different issue from the UI, in which case I have no idea what else it could be.

--- Comment #28 from Mike Erickson ghoti2007@gmail.com 2008-08-01 04:20:05 --- As of git version wine-1.1.2-151-gc2c1a55 i see a lot of these now when trying the demo (I try once and a while, hoping that another bugfix or addition improves things):
fixme:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_load_constants >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUniform4fvARB @ glsl_shader.c / 411 fixme:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_load_constantsF >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUniform4fvARB() @ glsl_shader.c / 231
The terminal fills up and it just repeats until I exit the demo. Does this point us to a better direction or idea? I have very little coding experience and don't really know what any of it means.

For me the UI-issues are fixed fine by the patch (nvidia 8600).
My mistake, I made a boo-boo somewhere and re-did it all. All is well now, ui and all! (awesome!)
Side note: I do have to turn off all the debug messages (WINEDEBUG=-all) so the cpu isn't hogged during the game. The error messages are a plenty (and harmless).
Thank you!
My only complaint now is the retail version's bug about connecting to ea's server to authenticate. (bug #13390)

--- Comment #39 from default_357-line@yahoo.de 2008-08-10 06:11:22 --- If you want to filter the most common console messages, but still keep an overview of them, here's a small tool: http://demented.no-ip.org/test18
Just run wine [spore] 2>&1 |./test18
Sorry for the filesize; it's statically linked with SDL and SDL_ttf.
It uses colored bars to represent what were for me the three most common error messages, and prints the rest to the console as usual.

The patch isn't working for me, and 0.9.46 isn't either.
If 0.9.46 isn't working for you, the patch can't help you, as it was intended to fix a regression (?) from 0.9.46.

I downloaded a copy of the 0.9.46 source but it doesn't build. Is there a different revision that you know works with spore too?
Sorry, I forgot which exact revision it broke in. The breaking change was made in Nov-14 2007, so all releases before that should work (unless they have other problems).

--- Comment #48 from Andrew Fenn andrewfenn@gmail.com 2008-08-20 02:33:34 --- I just tried the patch again and it's now working!
You need to run spore with safe mode on..
WINEDEBUG=-all wine SporeCreatureCreator.exe -w -r 800x600 -safe
If you don't do this then the patch doesn't work. This is because -safe sets the following variables in ConfigManager.txt in C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\SPORE\Data\Config
if ($safeMode)
alert "Running in safe mode" -info
setOption OptionLighting $Low
setOption OptionShadows $Low
setOption OptionEffects $Low
setOption OptionTextureDetail $Medium
setOption OptionPlanetQuality $Low
setOption OptionAudioPerformance $Low
setOption OptionPhotoRes $Low
setOption OptionVideoRes $Low
endif
I found that setting OptionEffects, OptionAudioPerformance and OptionVideoRes to high made the game not show the UI.

I think that another problem exists somewhere as the user interface doesn't load every time.
You can tell when it is not going to load as the text of the first screen looks grey instead of black. (see attachment) Everything looks brighter then it should be and the EA logo doesn't load.
This happens a lot but mysteriously I have noticed it happens less after compiling and installing wine? Anyway, it's purely random if the UI shows up or not.
From my testing if you don't use the -safe option the UI won't show at all.

--- Comment #50 from default_357-line@yahoo.de 2008-08-20 15:03:34 --- I have encountered the same thing, only here it fails much less often.

By looking at both Rico's patch (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15501) and the patch here by default_357-line. I made a new patch which is kind of a combination of the two.
The patch gets rid of the UI bug, the part descriptions not showing bug and the problem with the creature being hidden behind the grass.
I have run the program over 20 times and it runs every time correctly even if I change all the settings in ConfigManager.txt to "$High".

I have Spore - the final game. Don't ask how.
With Wine 1.0 on Fedora 9 x86_64 it installs and works. The interface is rendered properly. I can play the game. However, it seems that the "ground" in the cell phase of life is not rendered as an effect like "mouse trails" happens as objects leave behind their trail. Also on land, the ground is not rendered, but everything else is. Everything else is perfect. I can modify my creature (all screens rendered correctly). The startup video works. All sound works. FPS is fast.

Actually, applying the previously submitted patch fixes this issue as well, so I beleive it is in fact the same issue (of sorts).
I have the game too, same issue - with the patch for this app specifically, everything is flawless - including the tooltips that did not show in the creature creator.

Both are completely different problem. The interface not rendering bug still present, but it won't appears in Spore final. (due different codebase afaik). The second bug (wrong Z-order) affects both game. Spore final crashes sometimes too (for example starting, and always when you would like go out of the water. (1st evolution))

Setting the Lighting option to lowest makes the game not to crash at all when going out of the water.

--- Comment #58 from Frank Sagurna fgunni@01019freenet.de 2008-09-06 07:53:37 --- Now with wine 1.1.4 Most of the Problems seem to be gone: UI rendered correct as far as i can see. Sometimes objects appear in front of others like grass or legs that should be more in the background, but thats not part of this bug i think.

--- Comment #59 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2008-09-07 16:10:01 --- I think we should close this bug, because the Interface is rendered correctly with release 1.1.4. The other issue isn't solved, yet. But we should let it an own bug report. There are so many bugs for this game and all are mixed with informations and duplications about the same things! Probably we should sort them a bit.
