Summary: Minimize to tray broken - NoteTab Product: Wine Version: 0.9.59. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: earther@eartherdesigns.com
Ubuntu Gutsy, Gnome and wine-0.9.59
Regression - NoteTab works pretty well in wine-0.9.58 (a few minor quirks)
Problem: When NoteTab is launched, it only appears on the panel while loading. After loading, it is nowhere to be seen on the panel. This makes it impossible to minimize/maximize. If it is minimized from the application bar, it disappears and there is no way to get it back. The process needs to be killed.
Photoshop and a few other Windows apps do not have this problem with wine-0.9.59.
Testing: Last night I installed wine-0.9.59 and NoteTab Pro 5.61 on a fresh install of Ubuntu Gutsy on an old Dell and on Xubuntu Gutsy in Virtual Box.
Wine/NoteTab on the fresh install of Ubuntu produced the same bug which I observed on three other Gutsy installs I tested including my new working box. Several other NoteTab users also reported this bug on the NoteTab Linux list.
The shade format of XFCE handled minimizing NoteTab just fine. It has been reported on the NoteTab Linux list, that it also works with KDE and XFCE on Slackware.
I thought it might be related to Compiz that is running on my new machine but since the bug also appeared on the old Dell that doesn't seem to be the case.
The bug seems to be Gnome specific.
NoteTab author, Eric Fookes also posted these comments which might be helpful in correcting it:
"I suspect these issues affect any application that was compiled with Borland Delphi. I very much doubt that NoteTab is the only application affected.
"Unlike programs created with other compilers, Delphi programs use an invisible application window and a main application form that is the visible part of the program. The Wine developers need to take this special approach into account if they want their product to work correctly with all Delphi applications."
I searched and found several other possibly related bugs But wanted to report the Gnome specificity and also the comments about Borland Delphi.
I have rolled back to wine-0.9.58 for the moment.

--- Comment #1 from Dmitry Timoshkov dmitry@codeweavers.com 2008-04-17 00:26:26 --- This is a known regression in 0.9.59, it should be fixed in git, please retest.

--- Comment #2 from earther@eartherdesigns.com 2008-05-03 23:35:50 --- I finally found the time to start investigating git. Since I'm still on dialup (~10MB/hr), the initial download is a bit of a showstopper. So sticking with wine-0.9.58 for the moment but looking forward to 0.9.61 when it finally gets to the Gutsy repos.

--- Comment #3 from Matteo ermejoo3@gmail.com 2008-07-28 07:53:39 --- I'm experiencing the exact problem with a "run-out-of-box" web server, HFS by Rejetto. It appears in tray icon, but can't minimize it to tray (it exits!) even if the option is switched on.
Seems there are major problems about minimize/open/restore with this app(works correctly on Windows!)! Mine is set to open in tray: it shows its window for half a second then hiddens itself in tray, this works. [But]: 1) if I double click on the tray icon it doesn't show up. Done this, I can't no more click the restore button on right click menu. 2)If I remember to click restore it shows its window, but not in the bottom bar nor in alt-tab (it really goes nowhere if I minimize it, I must close it then). 3)So, the only way to show it correctly is to right click and let it do a "Self test", which at the end opens a dialog box with a message, and voilà, seems like this is what makes its window appear, and so the icon in the bottom bar. 4)mine is set to minimize to tray if closed. Instead, it simply closes.[THIS BUG]. Tried to obtain a new build from its helpful coder Rejetto to make it appear always as it does after self test, but nothing to do. Oh, using Wine 1.1.2 and Ubuntu 8.04.1.

--- Comment #6 from Larry Hamilton lm_hamilton@yahoo.com 2008-11-29 11:40:16 --- This is the same issue as bug 9579, and is related to Delphi Applications.
It occurs on all of the latest variations of NoteTab: Light, Standard, Pro, with the latest version 5.7b, on Wine up to 1.1.8. 1.1.9 is not yet available for Slackware for me to test.

--- Comment #8 from Oli Vhann3000@gmail.com 2009-10-06 01:29:15 --- This bug seems to also affect EasyUO: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=8516 (which is programmed in Delphi: http://old.easyuo.com/viewtopic.php?TopicID=293 )
This is using wine 1.1.26 on Slackware (Xfce) Under wmii, changing view does the same thing.
I guess this bug was corrected somewhere after last post (since I remember it once worked correctly), but there it is again.
I'll try pinpointing the patch which caused the regression
