Summary: Oblivion unplayable on 1.1.19 Product: Wine Version: 1.1.19 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: btthalion+wine@gmail.com
Oblivion has become unplayable as of 1.1.19 due to very very frequent crashes. I have a save point that reliably crashes right after it finishes loading, which is likely when it is attempting to render the scene. I have determined that the broken behavior started as of commit a932fdcb2fc51528f7e3e24c52e017025339da28, although it seems unlikely that this commit is directly related in my uneducated estimation.
I am running on Ubuntu 8.10 64bit and am using an Nvidia Geforce GTX 280 with Nvidia driver version 180.
I have attached the backtrace reported in the logs, and can provide any further logs given instructions on how to do so.

To test if the patch you've found is the one, causing issues - revert it with: git show a932fdcb | patch -p1 -R Then recompile wine and test.

Nvidia 180.11, I believe (this is the latest version distributed for Intrepid as far as I can tell).
I arrived at this commit via git bisect, so I did exactly as you suggest, but I reverted it again and confirmed that Oblivion ran fine.

--- Comment #7 from Brian Terlson btthalion+wine@gmail.com 2009-04-17 17:08:16 --- Now running 180.44 after updating to Jaunty, have memory manually specified in the registry, and the same behavior is evident.

--- Comment #8 from Brian Terlson btthalion+wine@gmail.com 2009-05-01 19:56:38 --- Still present in 1.1.20. The crash dialog cannot be interacted with either, making the crash a frustrating experience as wine has to be killed in the terminal.

And...the card itself is a GeForce 7600GT, which is the question you actually asked.

--- Comment #13 from blaise mgavl69@juno.com 2009-05-16 15:44:45 --- I'm experiencing the same infrequent crashes when bringing up the menu / inventory menus and right after saving with Oblivion. I decided to do some investigation so I'm attaching the terminal output log with crash backtrace. The crashes may be unrelated to the commit above but I'll revert and test it out.

I also discovered that I can get reliable crashes by simply launching oblivion.exe as opposed to oblivionlauncher.exe. The problems may be related... I'll attach that output as well in case it helps.

--- Comment #19 from Kol kol@MV8660.spb.edu 2009-05-27 16:27:45 --- The bug is present in Wine 1.1.20 and 1.1.22. When OffscreenRenderingMode is set to "pbuffer" the game crashes on launch, with "fbo" or "backbuffer" it happens after some minutes of playing. The crash output is similar to that attached to Comment #16.
Videocard: GeForce 8800GT, Nvidia driver: 180.51.

--- Comment #20 from Roan L aestrivex@gmail.com 2009-05-30 02:50:11 --- another confirmation of the existence of what seems to be this bug. i am experiencing reliable crashes upon loading any savegame from the starting menu (although i am able to start new games, and able to revert to old savegames via quickloading.
crashes produce the windows dialog box: wine has crashed.
i have also experienced similar random crashes in TES III: Morrowind, though with less consistency or frequency.

--- Comment #22 from Henri Verbeet hverbeet@gmail.com 2009-06-06 16:24:52 --- Use the "ShowCrashDialog" registry setting (see http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys) to disable the crash dialog. These latest logs look different from the initial one posted in comment #3. Could you post a +d3d,+d3d9 log (including full backtrace).

--- Comment #23 from Brian Terlson btthalion+wine@gmail.com 2009-06-06 17:44:27 --- When pouring through the debug logs, I noticed an out of memory error, so on a whim added back the VideoMemorySize registry entry, and my reliable crash now loads without issue... I don't know if this means that I incorrectly set the registry entry value previously, or if a newer version changed the nature of the bug (seems so, since the debug output has changed). I'm curious of the other people in this thread have VideoMemorySize specified in their registry, and if that makes a difference?
I can attach a debug log if needed, but I'm afraid it's an 8MB gzipped log of an of out of memory error.
