Bug #: 31495 Summary: Dota 2: performance issues on post-game screen Product: Wine Version: 1.5.11 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: phoenix@mail.ru Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 41403 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=41403 usual game fps
Repro: 1. Start/watch dota 2 game 2. Wait for one side to win 3. Observe performance of post-game screen
Result: Performance drops significantly while showcasing awards earned by player; after showcasing is finished, it starts spiking. Usually i have 30-35 fps with medium graphic settings, on post-game screen during showcasing it drops to 4-6, then spikes between 6-8 and 40 (final scene looks relatively simple).
Expected: No significant performance drop should occur.
Note: You can launch dota 2 with "-console" option (add it to RMB Dota 2 > Properties
Set launch options), during match press ~, and enter cl_showfps 1 - to
measure accurate value of fps.

I'm using NVIDIA gt260m with binary 304.37 driver. Sound has no effect on this issue (played for long time with -nosound option)

This is because the post-game screen's sound is pretty dang long, so might be more evident when the sound is longer/larger...

Anyway, the problem stays the same even when starting the game with "-nosound" (which seems to ease the problem being described in bug #27453).

--- Comment #10 from Anton Vorobyov phoenix@mail.ru 2012-11-07 14:56:01 CST --- By the way, recently performance there improved alot, most likely by updating NVIDIA blob which turned on some 'arguable' (as it was called on Phoronix) optimization by default. I'm not sure which version it was and i'm even not 100% sure it was driver, but it fixed issue to some extent. Will investigate next week what really caused it.

I have the new nvidia 304.64 driver installed and this issue is gone for me.
Sure, it is the newest one (6.11.2012), so it may include fixes/new features from older beta driver (310.14 was released at 15.10.2012). Even 304.60 was released after 310 beta, but it's less likely to contain fixes which may influence discussed issue.
Btw, i've downgraded wine to 1.5.11 and bug did not appear, so issue was fixed somewhere else.
Also, lags experienced at post-game screen with updated drivers may be those discussed in bug #27453.

--- Comment #17 from appel adamsappelgrein@gmail.com 2012-11-16 06:34:19 CST --- Stupid me forgot to reply. No noticeable improvement. Still lags quite horridly and if I don't press "close" quickly enough it goes slower and slower until it crashes.

It turns out that it just seemed resolved to me because it was diretide and the post game screen was different and didn't appear to have as bad of lag.

A native port doesn't fix the problem in wine.

--- Comment #24 from hanska2@luukku.com --- Is anyone anymore playing this via wine?
I remember having the weird lag when starting game and also when you destroy ancient. But in time it got better. I quess the dota port got better.
I still have this lag when I start the game even native port. But it's not that bad. But it's always there. I think it's because it's compiling some shaders.

I haven't played on wine in a bit since the native client came out but did you try with the -nosound flag? I also wonder if using a different window manager will help with the bug or not, even on the native linux client I saw slight performance improvement just switching to open box as my window manager.

--- Comment #26 from hanska2@luukku.com --- I haven't tried nosound. BUt I think this is because of some shader related thing.

--- Comment #27 from roger@mailinator.com --- I think the problem is not in wine. You got the same fps drop on native client too. It has improved, but it's still there. I think the game is still compiling some shaders or something like that.

--- Comment #29 from super_man@post.com --- I think we can close this. For several reasons. Game has native version = lower priority. The issue happened with native version too. And it's most likely shader related and not sound related (gpu drivers?). Also they have replaced the old engine with new one. And it's quite unlikely someone tries to test this anymore.

--- Comment #30 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
resolving 'INVALID' as per last comments.
If you can clearly prove the issue still being present when compared to Windows please provide performance measurements for:
* Windows * native Linux client * Wine * Wine-Staging with CSMT
Using latest Wine version and NVIDIA drivers of course.
