Summary: Multiple graphic problems in "The Witcher" Product: Wine Version: 0.9.60 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: HASH.DuOrden@gmail.com
In "The Witcher" there is no progress bars shown, at left-top of screen, for own health (red), for energy (yellow), for part progress (green) and for experience (sky blue around wolf medalion). No, there is no "rag doll" effect (as you can see on screen shot's) and everything normal in moves and menus over then noted in key binding menu.

Now key binding are look just like it should, as it shown on "KeyBinding menu screen under Windows" but in game screens are still the same as shown on my screenshot "Game screen under Linux-Wine".

I can confirm that on wine-1.1.10-551-g4cca303, the status bars in the upper left and the health of enemies don't work, as in the screenshot from comment 2. Steps to reproduce:
1) Download the demo (~1.9 GB):
http://www.thewitcher.com/community/en/www/download_the_demo.html
Install it.
2) Drop a copy of d3dx9_36.dll in windows/system32 (otherwise the game will crash on startup).
3) Start C:\Program Files\The Witcher Demo\System\witcher.exe. Don't try launcher.exe, it doesn't work.
4) Hit Esc repeatedly to skip videos, select New Game, pick any options you like, hit Esc repeatedly to skip intro sequence once the level has loaded. Click Okay when a dialog pops up telling you to get a sword, then hit Space to pause so you don't get killed in the combat. The problem should be visible in the upper left.
I've attached a log of stderr when I do this, piped through uniq -c because one line was repeated a few thousand times.

Graphical Defects still present in 1.1.18 for Witcher 1.0:
1) Empty vitality (red) and toxicity (green) bars. (Oddly enough the yellow endurance bar between them appears fine.)
2) Empty experience ring (sky blue) around the wolf medallion.
3) Missing colored rings beneath the other characters in the game denoting both their health and their attitude (blue for ally, green for neutral, or red for hostile).
4) I didn't see anyone else mentioning this one, but during combat I'm seeing a large annoying rectangular box around the cursor once the cursor is changed to a sword.
Graphical Defects Previously Fixed:
1) Key binding menu
I also agree with comment #12 that comment #11 is for a -different- performance-related bug. The graphical bugs in this report however are constant and do not depend on how long the game is played.

--- Comment #18 from Kevin Meyer billy65bob@gmail.com 2010-04-14 11:20:02 --- of the issues listed in comment 14 I can confirm 1 (vitality and toxicity bars), 2 (experience bar) and 3 (the health circlet for the enemies)
I can also identify 2 (3?) more issues
1) active mutagens/effects aren't listed around the medallion, (the first you'll encounter in game is named thunderbolt), hovers still produce the appropriate tooltip
2?) the tooltips seem to be missing part their background (can someone with a windows installation confirm this?)
3) many of the model polygons aren't rendered, I've attached a screenshot to describe the issue better than I can - look for disembodied eyes and teeth (and even hair)
I'm using a git checkout a few days after 1.1.42 (revision e35f54ef1f6775b6cbf2707450b1930d540d1e12 )

--- Comment #23 from doctordruidphd@yahoo.com 2010-07-19 12:53:28 --- Now that wine-1.2 has been released, I have been struggling to get The Witcher to work, without success. I had it working quite well, minus the status bars, in the 1.1.3x and 1.1.4x versions. But now the video is extremely slow, and all of the major characters are flashing. I used winetricks to set the video options back where they were in 1.1.3x, and the screen goes black when any potions that use video effects are drunk. What a mess! This is: 64-bit quad system, NVIDIA geforce 9800GT dual cards, kubuntu-10.04 lucid. I am having trouble with all my other games too, that used to work fine. So the video is completely messed up.

My workaround for this was to reinitialize the graphic drivers. Try "emerge -1 nvidia-drivers" and see if this fixes your problem. If it does, do this each time before playing.

One of the things I used to do when I had an nvidia card was to write a script to start the game. Try it and see if it helps.
ex.
#!/bin/bash # This script disables all the text output for Wine # debugging for improved performace. export WINEDEBUG=-ALL export WINEPREFIX=/storage/mywine/GAME GAME_DIR=$WINEPREFIX/GAME cd $GAME_DIR nvidia-settings --load-config-only wine GAME.exe > output.log 2>&1

You need to disable the gameux dll: In winecfg under Libraries add gameux and set it to disabled.
(btw.: This has nothing to do with the rendering problems.)

Hi, I've version 1.5 of the game and ATI drivers 10.10 and that game it's a mess with Wine 1.3.6.
No background in menu screen, but neither the screen is resetting so when you click on an option the new screen appears directly over the old one. Any graphic detail doesn't go beyond Medium and the writings are misaligned. If you reach the new game option you'll find yourself in a world without any 3d model and worst of all not all the textures are in place by providing you a wonderful vector-like game.
Now I'll try with 16 bit mode, but any help is well appreciated: PLEASE do not force me to install a Windows game on Windows itself ;)

Hi,
thank you. In the graphics nothing has changed unfortunately but I have the impression that the camera isn't so choppy as before.
By the way at this point it could be a wise thing for Wine Internet site to branch the appdb: one for nVidia and one for Ati so the users can be redirected more easily and of course when the companies see that with their graphic cards Linux is no more playable maybe they will work to make better drivers :)
I'm about to attach three files: one for the Options screen from the main menu; one for Kair Morhen (I know you cannot see any fortress but I can assure that the picture is indeed Kair Morhen :( ) and finally the log.

--- Comment #45 from Torge tdellert@gmx.de 2011-09-30 17:52:15 CDT --- With Wine 1.3.29, the issues with the missing bars and health targets still remain. Otherwise, the game is running perfectly (I followed the registry hints from post 33).

--- Comment #46 from netz@lytenyn.de 2011-11-21 04:02:09 CST --- These issues (missing progress bars and health bars for targeted creatures) persist for me in wine 1.3.32 on amd64 with a nvidia card. I am using native d3dx9_36, even though that did not change anything, and I did not use any registry tweaks.
I am experiencing other bugs as well (something crashes every time I launch anything, even winecfg in this prefix, and I have the 'puppeteer lines' mentioned in another bug as well).
If I can provide additional logs or other tests, please tell me.

--- Comment #48 from Jan Essert netz@lytenyn.de 2012-09-14 06:46:31 CDT --- I experience the errors from comment #14 (missing health/toxicity bar, missing experience, missing coloured rings for targets all the time, using a Nvidia 8800 GTS 320MB, binary drivers, on Gentoo, wine v. 1.5.12.
In addition to this, I sometimes experience the "puppeteer lines" from another bug, as well as the "transparent characters" from bug # 32.
The first problems are annoying, but not really problematic, but the latter two really make the game unplayable.
"Luckily", the latter two issues only happen sometimes: Either the issue is already present when starting the game or not. Additionally, if it is present, sometimes restarting the game helps. On the other hand, yesterday I started the game five times in a row getting the transparent characters every time before giving up.
I would really like to help debug these issues, which kind of logs/tests do you need?
Thanks in advance!

--- Comment #54 from andreus.viktualius@gmail.com 2012-12-15 10:51:29 CST --- I was able to solve most of my graphic problems using the info postet in Post 33. Then I could get rid of the "puppeteer lines" by switching the Offscreen-Rendering-Mode to "Backbuffer" (Through PlayOnLinux). Now, only the Life- and Toxicitybar (and the NPC-Circles) are missing, so its totally playable!

It is the only way I've found to reliably play the game (in addition to following all the advice above, especially comment 33).
