Summary: Lord of the Rings Online crashes when loading if Texture Detail is set higher than Very Low Product: Wine Version: 1.1.27 Platform: PC URL: http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/? app_id=2869;tips=1 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: sandalle@sourcemage.org
From "Crashing While Loading" on
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=2869;tips=1: "If you are experiencing crashing while changing zones, there is a fairly simple fix. Before you change zones, reduce your texture quality to very low, then proceed to the next zone."
The less memory a computer has the more likely this seems to happen. Works fine at Very High on the same box with Windows 7 (64-bit) and Windows XP (32-bit).
WINE 1.1.27. nVidia driver 190.18 nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 9300M GS] (rev a1) 512Mb (on first computer w/4G RAM) nVidia Corporation G73 [GeForce 7300 GT] (rev a2) 256Mb (on second computer w/3G RAM) X.org 1.6.3 Linux 2.6.30.5

Is there a demo available, and if so, does it exhibit the same behavior?
There's a ten day trial (http://www.lotro.com/trial/ and https://trial.turbine.com/lotro.php) you can try, the client for the trial is the same as for the regular play. The client may be downloaded at http://www.lotro.com/support/download-lotro.

--- Comment #6 from Eric Sandall sandalle@sourcemage.org 2009-08-30 01:13:47 --- Could this be related to Bug #19206 (Intermittent silent crashing of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach)? Not enough information in that bug to tell, but sounds similar and both are games from Turbine.

From the sound of this wine isn't detecting the correct amount of graphics
memory so uses the default. Unfortunately LotRO doesn't gracefully exit when it runs out of graphical memory.
Setting the VideoMemorySize reg key normally clears these problems up (in my experience, I'm advocate for LotRO over at Codeweavers).

When using Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=2910 ) or Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=4891), I have the VideoMemory set as per the recommendations. The game still crashes even with Very Low, it just takes much longer. Memory leak? The higher the Textures we set the faster it crashes, and even more so if you transfer zones a lot (e.g. entering/exiting buildings).
Also, DDO is now free to play: http://www.ddo.com/ddosupport/download-ddo

--- Comment #9 from Eric Sandall sandalle@sourcemage.org 2010-03-20 01:20:27 --- Also, this may be a duplicate of Bug #19206 if the reporters can verify that lowering Texture detail mitigates this issue.

--- Comment #10 from Athrun samurai_no_densetsu@yahoo.es 2011-06-19 07:10:19 CDT --- Tested every texture setting with at least two hours of gameplay, I have not experienced a single problem, so I think that this bug can be safely closed. If anyone is still experiencing it, please reopen it and provide traces as requested.

Athrun, what graphics card and driver version are you using?
Wine 1.3.22 with:
-----------------------------[snip]----------------------------- OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 9300M GS/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 270.41.06 OpenGL shading language version string: 3.30 NVIDIA via Cg compiler -----------------------------[snip]-----------------------------
But I'm sure that this is unimportant, I remember several test data and a couple of mails from users saying that they were running it into maxed settings (including texture detail high). If someone still having it, might worth to investigate though.

--- Comment #13 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2013-11-13 16:52:12 CST --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 2 years. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.6 or newer) wine? If so, please attach the terminal output in 1.7.6 (see http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log).
