Summary: starting games totaly kills the sound on the system Product: Wine Version: 1.1.6 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P1 Component: directx-dsound AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: DoDoEntertainment@gmail.com
After starting a game, sound entirely dissapears from the system.
The fix is to invoke: sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset Intel
Bug happens on ubuntu 8.04 x64 on "Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller".
It's a regression from 1.1.5.
I've noticed the disappearing of sound after starting gta:san andreas (which works relatively fine under 1.1.5). Same happens if I start Heroes of Might and Magic 4.

--- Comment #2 from Nenad Mikša DoDoEntertainment@gmail.com 2008-10-14 16:05:05 --- I'm not that stupid.
Of course I've checked the volume. I've even tried restarting the pulseaudio sound server, and even the computer, but none of this helped.
The only thing that helps is "sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset Intel".
It's just a guess, but I think wine somehow corrupts the alsa state (the /var/lib/alsa/asound.state file). This might not even be the wine bug, but I can't recreate it with any native linux application. It started to happen within san andreas and heroes of might and magic after applying the latest updates last weekend, which also included wine 1.1.6.

--- Comment #3 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-10-14 17:21:09 --- Have you checked all the volumes? PCM & master? And that the both are not muted?
It's really easy to overlook simple things. This by no means mean that some one is stupid.

--- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-10-14 18:51:10 --- Can you try rolling wine back and see if it works?
If so, run a regression test: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15620
--- Comment #5 from Nenad Mikša DoDoEntertainment@gmail.com 2008-10-15 03:29:30 --- I've definitely checked all the volumes I have.
I've installed wine via .deb packages (using wine's apt repository). I'm not keen on compiling by myself (I did it once, and it took over 40 minutes). I'll try to find the 1.1.5 .deb and install it. If I succeed, I'll run regression test.

--- Comment #6 from Nenad Mikša DoDoEntertainment@gmail.com 2008-10-15 03:37:13 --- Confirmed!
Rolling back to 1.1.5 and now heroes of might and magic 4 and gta: san andreas work well. No sound is lost.
It's definitely a regression!

Be sure to use ccache. Initial compiles will be slow, but subsequent ones will be much faster.

I hope I'll have this weekend enough time to make a full regression test. Since I'm on x64 platform it won't be as easy as on x86.

Just as I have started a regression test, I've run into a big troubles.
First of all:
dodo@2nd-of-12:~/wine_new/wine-git$ sudo apt-get build-dep wine wine-dev [sudo] password for dodo: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies: libasound2-dev: Depends: libasound2 (= 1.0.15-3ubuntu4) but 1.0.16-0ubuntu0.1 is to be installed libglu1-mesa-dev: Depends: libglu1-mesa (= 7.0.3~rc2-1ubuntu3) but 7.1.0~git20080728.b5095ab9-0ubuntu0tormod is to be installed E: Broken packages
After I've figured out how to solve that (I had to enable debian's repository and I'm on ubuntu hardy), I've run into an even bigger problem: after running the same command again, I've got this:
The following packages have unmet dependencies: libglu1-mesa-dev: Depends: libglu1-mesa (= 7.0.3-6) but 7.1.0~git20080728.b5095ab9-0ubuntu0tormod is to be installed libstdc++6-dev: Depends: g++-3.4 (= 3.4.6-6ubuntu5) but it is not going to be installed Depends: gcc-3.4-base (= 3.4.6-6ubuntu5) but 3.4.6-8 is to be installed E: Broken packages
After that, ignoring the above errors, I've run the following:
dodo@2nd-of-12:~/wine_new/wine-git$ CC="ccache gcc -m32" ./configure --verbose checking build system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu checking host system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes checking for gcc... ccache gcc -m32 checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables See `config.log' for more details.
Can someone please help me with these errors?
In the meantime I've tried RollerCoaster Tycoon. It has sound with 1.1.5, but kills the sound with 1.1.6 too.
Can anyone else recreate this bug, or is it x86_64 and "Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller" specific bug?

--- Comment #15 from Kevin Larson kevinlarson1@gmail.com 2008-10-31 15:29:20 --- I have basically the same error when trying to start Warcraft 3. Other applications (that don't use sound) do not seem to cause this problem. It seems to simply mute the PCM channel and set the value to 0 (from 74). Reverting to 1.15 solved my problem. I'll see if I can run a regression test later.

--- Comment #17 from Alex alexrudd0@gmail.com 2009-04-19 11:09:13 --- Perhaps Kevin and I are having a different problem, but I am experiencing exactly the same behavior. Trying to play a game (in my case Sacrifice) mutes the PCM channel and sets the volume to zero. I had to open alsamixer (the GNOME volume control works too), and unmute it *and* bring the volume back up.
wine-1.1.19 on Ubuntu 9.04. I don't have the time to try a regression test; this computer is a relic and takes forever to compile.

No. I'm now using pulseaudio driver and that works fine (on 1.1.29).
I'm currently using 1.1.29, because 1.1.32 still didn't come with Fedora's updates.

Which pulseaudio driver is that? Does the bug persist with WineHQ Wine without any patches?

--- Comment #22 from Roman m01brv@mail.ru 2010-08-30 09:25:36 CDT --- I suffered this or very similar problem with sound, and on my system it happened because I had all audio drivers ticked in the corresponding winecfg tab, and due to some reason wine was choosing oss instead of alsa. Thus each sound application running under wine locked the sound card (oss device /dev/dsp) in a monopolic way, disabling any other app to emit any sound. I have unticked everything except alsa and now all is OK.

--- Comment #23 from Francisco Pina Martins f.pinamartins@gmail.com 2011-11-07 06:07:56 CST --- It's been over a year. Is this still an issue? I can't reproduce it with 1.3.32 (although I never tried the affected versions, so I'm not sure I ever was affected), but the sound system in wine has improved a lot since last year. I don't have the same sound card as the original bug report describes, but it's a very similar one:
