Is this some kind of threading problem? Freezes seem to happen always just after application uses DLL_THREAD_ATTACH in DllMain function.
I never managed to track down the actual bug, but I don't think so. The game creates a new thread when you enter fights and the crash is somewhere in the fight setup so naturally they follow each other, but I don't think it's related to threading as such.

If you download and use msvcrt.dll as native the battels that crash will work (at lest the ones I have encounterd so far the one for the fishred quest and collect the frogs from the castle dungeon and no random battles crash so far).
I use wine 1.1.20 on x86-64 and the game is patched to 1.7 if it's any help.

Scratch that, my mistake. After making sure it was installed properly, everything works here as well. So yeah, probably a msvcrt bug somewhere.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15817
--- Comment #18 from kjella79@yahoo.no 2009-05-05 17:20:36 --- Ok, so I've done a lot of testing that shows that msvcrt.dll is the solution, but to me it seems a big WTF that it is the solution. Ruhnning a trace+msvcrt it always ends with something like:
trace:msvcrt:MSVCRT_operator_delete (0x20dc3680) trace:msvcrt:MSVCRT_operator_delete (0xaa780e0) trace:msvcrt:DllMain (0x7e510000, DLL_THREAD_ATTACH, (nil)) pid(8), tid(29), tls(2) trace:msvcrt:MSVCRT_setlocale (4 (null))
I don't get it. The last call is checking what LC_NUMERIC is (the default, never been set and called 100s of times). Also the thread attachment is happening many times without issue, in fact checking the code it does nothing (nor should it).
There's new and delete operations but if there was an issue with basic memory allocation/deallocation you'd think tons of applications would have issues. And that's all in the trace, really.
My conclusion so far is that King's Bounty is *probably* calling some sort of function that doesn't have a trace - it looks like there's quite a few of those *grumble* and is crashing on one of their outputs.

Yes, at least in the full game. I had consistent crashes entering a specific tower. (Happened every time) This was Wine 1.1.33 and Wine git as of 2009-11-22.
Using a native version of msvcrt.dll I can play for hours without crashing.

--- Comment #34 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com 2012-02-18 01:26:19 CST --- Still present in Wine-1.4-rc4. Native msvcrt.dll is still a workaround.
The linked demo version can be used to reproduce the problem. Please bear in mind that the crash doesn't happen each time you enter or finish a battle (seems to happen randomly). When the crash does happen, it always occurs during the loading screens.
Following these steps it seems the crash is always reproducible on my system:
1. Install the demo. The game needs native d3dx9_36.dll 2. Launch the demo with kb.exe. In the menu choose <New game>, click on <Next>, then skip the cinematic. 3. When the game is loaded, left-click on the knight standing in front of you. In the dialog choose the second sentence: <I will refuse the Test and rely on your choice>. Finish the conversation clicking on the remaining two sentences. 4. Left-click on the chest behind the knight and grab the Training Sword. 5. Go to the lower part of the screen where a portal is. Enter the portal which leads you to the main game. A loading screen is displayed and the crash happens here. The game either quits unexpectedly, or it hangs with the loading screen. Whichever occurs, the terminal output always ends with

--- Comment #35 from Alexey Loukianov mooroon2@mail.ru 2012-04-17 05:27:37 CDT --- Still present in Wine 1.5.2, but the steps GyB had posted above are not warranted to result in a crash. From what I can conclude after testing it today with Wine 1.5.2, on my PC probability of this crash to happen is rather low - I've been able to play the game for about 30 minutes, exploring the map and fighting monsters met on a way, until I had finally hit this bug and got CTD with the above err:seh mentioned in logs.
Installing native msvcrt 6.0 sp6 runtime using winetricks workarounds this but: after installing it I was able to play the game for several hours straight without any problems.

--- Comment #36 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com 2012-06-09 05:43:54 CDT --- Can anyone retest this bug with Wine 1.5.6 and using only built-in dlls? Bug #23706 has been fixed in 1.5.6 so you don't need native d3dx9_36.dll for KB:The Legend. I'm not quite sure of this, as I've played KB:TL only for an hour, but it seems that on all those occasions where the game used to crash with previous Wine versions (and with native d3dx9_36) now I can't reproduce the crash. Strangely, if I use native d3dx9_36 with 1.5.6, the crashes are there again. This applies to KB:Armored Princess as well, although KB:AP currently needs the patch in bug #30786.
