--- Comment #2 from Alexandre Julliard julliard@winehq.org 2007-10-11 13:46:58 --- It works fine here. Probably the amount of RAM and swap on your box causes GlobalMemoryStatus to return a value that Illustrator doesn't like. You can use +heap to see what it returns.

--- Comment #3 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2007-10-11 14:01:20 --- I have 3GB of RAM, that might be it. Here's the trace you suggested:
trace:heap:GlobalMemoryStatusEx <-- LPMEMORYSTATUSEX: dwLength 64, dwMemoryLoad 17, ullTotalPhys bcb2a000, ullAvailPhys 9be4c000, ullTotalPageFile e9a2e000, ullAvailPageFile c88d0000, ullTotalVirtual 7ffdffff, ullAvailVirtual 7ffcffff
I guess I'll try booting Linux with 1GB just to see if that helps.

--- Comment #4 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2007-10-11 14:11:11 --- Yes, booting with just 1GB of RAM lets Illustrator 8 start ok.
Hmm. What can we do about this, if anything? Eventually we could have a quirks mode where we hid RAM from particular apps...?

Actually it seems to be the total page file size that confuses it. Give this patch a try.
