Summary: regression: PAF 5 help window text is blank Product: Wine Version: 1.1.14 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: rm.riches@verizon.net
Created an attachment (id=19187) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=19187) stdout/stderr output from Wine when user clicks on a new chapter heading to view
In application, PAF (Personal Ancestral File) 5, the help window (brought up by the yellow question mark in the tool bar) right-hand text pane is blank with the most recent couple of Wine versions. The help window uses Wine Gecko. This is a regression, as it worked better with several versions up and including 1.1.11 than it does more recently.
With Wine version 1.1.11, the text would display. With Mandriva 2008.0, it displayed very well. The same Wine version with Mandriva 2009.0 displays strangely, but the text can be read if the user really wants to read it. I have not investigated the issue between the two Mandriva releases.
Wine version 1.1.12 would not install without applying a patch to the Wine source, so results there are a bit muddy.
With Wine version 1.1.13, the right-hand help window is always blank, even when there should be text displayed. Wine version 1.1.14 behaves identically to 1.1.13. I'll attach the stdout/stderr output from Wine in case that helps isolate the problem. This output happens whenever the user clicks on another chapter of text to view.
David Lee Lambert has logged the blank help text window problem in his test results using Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 "Etch".
I would be happy to provide debug channel output. However, my work schedule does not leave me enough spare time to run a regression.

--- Comment #3 from Robert Riches rm.riches@verizon.net 2009-05-14 21:41:33 --- The symptoms of this regression have continued unchanged/unfixed through Wine version 1.1.21. Being as the Clinton Stimpson has isolated the commit that appears to have caused it, it would be nice if the regression could be fixed.
Has the author of the commit been informed? Is there a way to put the author on the Cc: list for this bug?

--- Comment #4 from Dan Schmidt helpdeskdan@gmail.com 2009-07-04 00:26:45 --- Wow, when I bring up help in 1.1.24, it crashes. At least it comes up with a dialog announcing that it will do so.

That's a different bug. Try in 1.1.25 and if still there, run a regression test/file a new bug.

--- Comment #7 from Robert Riches rm.riches@verizon.net 2009-07-05 19:45:13 --- I tested PAF 5's help function (yellow question mark, Wine Gecko, etc.) with Wine 1.1.24 and 1.1.25, and it did not crash for me. It didn't display any text for most of the pages, but it didn't crash. I wonder whether the crashing issue might be environment dependent. I'm on Mandriva 2009.0.

--- Comment #8 from Dan Schmidt helpdeskdan@gmail.com 2009-07-05 20:56:07 --- I have gecko installed via winetools, Ubuntu 8.04 and 1.1.25. Comes up with a program error messages saying it must close. Nobody else?

--- Comment #9 from Robert Riches rm.riches@verizon.net 2009-07-05 21:19:21 --- How about making a new prefix area and letting PAF 5 and Wine install Gecko themselves?

--- Comment #11 from Robert Riches rm.riches@verizon.net 2009-08-11 19:25:02 --- Dan, that's great that you have a solution to the crash you were seeing.
Just to keep everyone on the same page, the original bug symptom I reported here, the PAF5 help window is blank (except for a very small fraction of pages/topics). I just tested that with Wine 1.1.26.
