The program that is freezing when run with wine is:
2010 USMLE FREDv2 step 3 practice CBT 
freezes on start up when running exam, 
and ole error 80004001 shows upon hitting esc button, when you close the
program.

i really need help with this, i need this for my licensing exam.

wine was able to run the 2009 version for the most part, but one of the test
functions would stop working mid way.

There are a couple of problems that I can see after installing the step 3
practice exam within a clean Wine prefix on wine-1.1.44-290-g7d3cb53:

1. Assuming that wine-gecko is already installed, starting a practice exam
yields a white screen and the output:

registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {48123bc4-99d9-11d1-a6b3-00c04fd91555} not

err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {48123bc4-99d9-11d1-a6b3-00c04fd91555}
could be created for context 0x3

Using winetricks to install msxml3 works around this problem.

2. The msxml3 redist doesn't suppress all of the missing interface errors, as I
see:

err:ole:create_server class {88d969c0-f192-11d4-a65f-0040963251e5} not
registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {88d969c0-f192-11d4-a65f-0040963251e5}
could be created for context 0x5

Installing the msxml4 redist makes this go away.

3. More importantly, after installing the msxml redists, launching the exam
gives me the message:

"A Fatal error has occurred accessing content: js/yui/close12_1.gif:
'js/yui/close12_1.gif' is not a valid integer value"

To work around this, I installed IE6 using the winetricks script, eschewing the
wine-gecko renderer.

In summary, the quickest workaround to get the application immediately working
is, starting with a clean Wine prefix, to use the winetricks script
(http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks) to do winetricks msxml3 msxml4 ie6. That
seems to get the test interface more or less operable.

first of I want to thank you, I called the NBME test software distributors and
they were not even able to provide me with any assistance.

I have done all the things you have said, and it worked to the extend that i
can actually see what's on the screen the display (no more white screen), but i
still can not use the program.
When I use the cursor (to click on) any answers or any of the buttons, it
disappears. It is visible on the periphery of the screen but not in the area
where it is actually necessary.

if you can provide me with any further assistance it will be greatly
appreciated.

The most important problem I am having is

When I run the CCS portion of the exam, example when you click CCS case 1.

At the begining of the case I am able to use the " orders and chart review"
button and enter orders.

Once I go on to do any other function like do a physical exam, the Orders and
chart review button becomes non-functional and even though I click on it.
Nothing happens and I can not enter any orders.

This is the most frustrating to me, because without being able to enter orders
your patient "dies" and im unable to do the case accurately

Thank you very much for your prompt response. The reason I have this on a P1
status is my exam is coming up and without being able to practice on the
practice software I will not be able to do a run through of how the exam is
done.

Hmm, I tried launching FredV2Orient.exe and then starting the "Step 3 Tutorial"
exam. I seem to be able to select test subsections through the listbox on the
left hand side of the window, and pressing test buttons worked for me. Could
you be more specific about the problem? You claim to be using Wine 1.1.42, so
upgrading to the latest development version (1.1.44) might make a difference.

Some tracing suggests that this is a comctl32 problem. Use the winetricks
script to install the comctl32 redist.

{48123bc4-99d9-11d1-a6b3-00c04fd91555} msxml3 interface. The missing msxml4 DOM
document interface seems to be covered by other bugs. I'll open a few new bugs
for the other problems that were discussed.

I believe I have the same issue with a different application. I get the
following error messages relative to msxml:

fixme:msxml:domdoc_QueryInterface interface
{37d84f60-42cb-11ce-8135-00aa004bb851} not implemented
fixme:msxml:domdoc_putref_schemas (0x145c80): semi-stub

It would seem that this capability has yet to be implemented!
